Aside from being a popular destination for travelers, the lake and its surrounding area was also home to over 4,000 families as the largest urban wetland in Cambodia.

El lago Boeung Kak, en la capital de Camboya, Phnom Penh, fue una vez un centro turístico: el pintoresco lago y la zona del lago era popular entre los mochileros que se congregaron allí para sentarse, charlar, beber cerveza y ver el atardecer. Aparte de ser un destino popular para los viajeros, el lago y sus alrededores también fue el hogar de más de 4.000 familias como el mayor humedal urbano en Camboya.

Diapositiva 12 de 30: However, thanks to a property deal struck by the Cambodian government that involved filling the lake entirely, Boeung Kak Lake has been reduced to a muddy puddle that looks unrecognizable compared to its former self.

Sin embargo, gracias a un acuerdo de propiedad golpeado por el gobierno camboyano que involucró el llenado del lago por completo, el lago Boeung Kak se ha reducido a un charco fangoso que parece irreconocible en comparación con su antigua apariencia.

El acuerdo no sólo ha matado el turismo en la zona, como casas de huéspedes populares, tiendas y cafés, también ha resultado desastroso para las familias que dependían del lago para sobrevivir. Muchos de ellos han tenido que trasladarse, lidiar con las inundaciones frecuentes en sus hogares o tomar una suma insignificante 7,950 dólares como compensación.

Many of them have had to relocate, deal with frequent flooding in their homes or take a paltry $7,950 (£6,000) sum as compensation.
